IBREW Shinbashi

A minute from Shimbashi Station, on the ground floor of the Shinbashi Ekimae Building No. 1 (an escalator up from the underground Shiodome gates), IBREW pours about 30 craft beers, Japanese and imported, changing every day to every week. Basic-tier beers are ¥429 for a 270ml half pint and ¥759 for a 470ml pint; Limited, Extreme and Ultimate climb to ¥1,419 a half, so check the tier before you order. There's no cover charge and no otoshi.

Inside are a U-shaped counter for 16, 24 table seats and room for 18 standing. Pick from the beer list behind the QR code and tell the staff the number and size, or write numbers on the flight sheet on the table: three tasters from ¥1,089. The food is izakaya-style: Shinbashi hormone (grilled mixed offal), a Japanese-style fish and chips made with horse mackerel, salted cabbage and kushikatsu.

One of five IBREW branches (Ginza, Akihabara, Ebisu and Yokohama are the others). It opens at 13:00 on weekdays and 11:00 at weekends and on holidays, which makes it a legitimate afternoon stop. Non-smoking throughout. Cash only.
